Dental bridges

Dental bridges

Bridges are designed and created to replace one or more missing teeth. They need the support of adjacent natural teeth to carry the teeth that are missing. They look, feel and function like natural teeth.

Dental bridges can effectively prevent many problems that arise due to missing teeth, while also improving your appearance.  Gaps left by missing teeth can cause surrounding teeth to shift out of alignment and may expose gums to potential infection. Additionally, normal speaking and chewing abilities can be compromised.

Bridges can be constructed from gold alloys, non-precious alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Porcelain is often bonded to either a precious or non-precious metal.

Bridges are either permanently attached (fixed bridges) or they can be removable.

Fixed bridges are typically cemented to the natural teeth next to the space left by the missing tooth. A pontic (false tooth) replaces the lost tooth. Crowns, which are cemented onto the natural teeth, provide support for the bridge.

Removable bridges are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or by precision attachments. Removable bridges, as the name implies, can be taken out and cleaned. Fixed bridges offer more stability than their removable counterparts.

Implant supported dental bridges

Implants are the modern way to replace missing teeth. An implant is placed in the bone where the tooth root would have originally been. When it has fused to the bone it can be restored with individual crowns or, when more than one tooth is missing, with an implant supported dental bridge. Even if you have no teeth in one or both jaws, implants can be placed and an implant supported dental bridge securely fixed.
