Periodontal surgery
Great smiles are built on healthy gums!
Periodontal disease results in inflammation that can damage the gums, as well as the nearby teeth and bone supporting the teeth. This can result in tooth loss, as well as problems relating to the underlying bone structure. Chronic inflammation can also lead to additional, serious health problems.
Untreated, gum disease ultimately can lead to losing your teeth, so it’s important to take care of this problem. Periodontic health is an important component of good general health. Inflammation due to periodontal disease may possibly cause or exacerbate other medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and diabetes, and may lead to pregnancy complications. These conditions may also cause periodontal disease. Therefore, it is important to have an annual evaluation of your periodontal health, especially if you already have one of these conditions. We can help bring your gums back to good health and also help you prevent further problems.
There are many signs of gum disease. Your gums may become red, swollen or tender, or they may bleed frequently. You may have bad breath that doesn’t go away, your teeth may be loose or your gums may have pulled away from your teeth. The sooner you get treatment, the better. Found early, gum disease often can be treated with a minor procedure by your dentist.
Your dentist will create a treatment plan for a nonsurgical or surgical procedure and explain the steps involved. If gum disease hasn’t progressed too far, the periodontist may treat you with a nonsurgical tooth scaling and/or root planning, which removes deposits such as plaque and tartar that carry harmful bacteria. In more severe cases, you may need dental surgery to remove bacteria and to promote healthy bone and tissue growth to reverse the damage.
Your dentist will discuss the procedure you need and describe each step. We’ll make sure you receive the attention and personal service you need to get back to good oral health.
