Tooth extractions

Tooth extractions

A dental extraction is the procedure to remove a tooth from mouth. A dental extraction is usually required if one of your teeth is damaged beyond practical repair. The most common reasons for tooth extractions include:

  • If severe tooth decay or infection make it impossible to repair a tooth
  • A mobile tooth with severe periodontal disease, pulp necrosis, or periapical abscess, for which root canal treatment failed
  • If the tooth is blocking other teeth from coming in
  • During orthodontic work, teeth may need to be extracted to create room for the teeth that are being moved into place
  • Wisdom teeth are often extracted either before or after they come in
  • Supernumerary teeth

Wisdom teeth extractions

Wisdom teeth extraction is common and is a result of wisdom teeth being impacted, not growing in properly or at the correct angle, or causing overcrowding.  Wisdom tooth extraction can also be a preventative measure to reduce future problems related to teeth and gums. Extractions of wisdom teeth, or any other teeth within the mouth, are performed right in the comfort of our Studiodent dental office and are nearly painless with use of a local anesthetic.

What to expect

Your dentist will first administer anesthetic to numb the area and reduce discomfort. During the extraction, you will feel the pressure of the tooth being removed, but will not feel any pain. Typically, the dentist is able to remove your tooth within a matter of minutes.
